Reminiscent of homes in the Sierra Nevada mountains, this decomposed modern ranch maximizes the owner's views of Whitefish Mountain, Glacier National Park, Mount Aeneas, and Foys Lake while its understated massing and subdued material palette let it disappear into its treed surroundings. To encourage the owner's love of hospitality, the dining area can accommodate meals for seventeen individuals, while the semi-attached guest cabin provides sleeping provisions for family and friends. Massive french doors and transom windows line the vaulted great room where supple leather furniture arranged around the stone fireplace provide views to the mountains for meaningful conversations.

Secluded in the rolling hills of the north valley, this home sits proudly above the estate's pastures, stables, arena, and river with panoramic views of the Swan, Mission, Whitefish, and Blacktail mountain ranges. This main structure will be a legacy home for the family, signifying all that can be achieved with hard work and clarity of heart. Like many great lodges of the west, this home is built of heavy timbers, stone, and glass and will be able to accommodate all of the owner's children and grandchildren for holiday celebrations throughout the year.
Stoneback Residence
Lakeside, MT - 2021
2,400 square feet
Construction Pending
This modest ranch was designed as an eclectic, mountain-modern home for a retired couple whose sole intent in building was to "age in a beautiful place". The meandering plan makes the most of the sloped site with a focus on saving the trees, maintaining views of the lake, celebrating the stone outcropping as a walled garden, and maximizing access to natural light deep in the heart of the home. The lofty ceiling of the great room creates an atrium that makes the most of the winter daylight and protects the space from the harsh summer sun while a modern basalt fireplace helps anchor it to the earth.
