The Homestead
Beartooth Mountains, MT
7,125 square feet
Designed 2023
This project is about the past and about the future. It's about being embedded in a place and breathing beauty and time. This 200-acre homestead was settled in the late 1800s and has remained in the family for generations. Our primary goal was to honor the heritage of this seemingly ancient place while enabling it to serve those yet to come. Visitors arrive through an old-growth forest of Tamaracks and towering pines and are greeted by glimpses of the original walled orchard which creates the north boundary to the parking court. Across the stone courtyard, this timeless yet modern estate repurposed the original cabin into a quaint guest house that is attached the main house with a glass breezeway. The main house blends a vernacular material palette and agrarian massing with the essence of an English manor house. The "Great Hall" is the central structure that accommodates the kitchen, living room, dining room, and support areas. The main bedroom wing extends to the east to provide privacy and capture the stunning views to the east and south. Nestled between these two masses, a covered outdoor living space beckons for you to come and sit a while, and a secondary bedroom wing reaches out to the south to frame the pool patio and further anchor the home to the earth it is rooted in.
